CALDWELL -- A fire broke out in the attic of home in downtown Caldwell this morning and quickly spread to the rest of the house before the flames could be extinguished.
Capt. Shane Arak with the Caldwell Fire Department says the home was occupied but the residents managed to get out safely and were at a neighbor's house trying to stay warm when firefighters arrived on scene.
The house is located at the corner of N. Kimball Avenue and E. Chicago Street. The fire was reported to dispatch just after 9 a.m.
Arak says when fire crews arrived smoke and flames could be seen coming from the attic. A call then went out for a second alarm.
Crews from Caldwell and Middleton battled the fire and the elements. Arak says fighting fires in extreme cold can be very challenging.
The roof of the house collapsed. Arak says the fire and water damage has made this home a total loss.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
