BOISE -- The State Board of Education is calling on all of Idaho's public university presidents to follow the University of Idaho's lead and form task forces to address alcohol and substance abuse among students.
U of I President Duane Nellis has formed two committees. One will look at the culture and behavior of students when it comes to high-risk drinking and drug use.
The other will review, evaluate and make recommendations concerning the university's relationship with fraternities and sororities.
Today's request by the State Board of Education signals heightened concern for the culture of drinking that has become an issue on college campuses nationwide, especially the problem of alcohol consumption at potentially deadly levels.
The university presidents have been asked to report back with their findings and plans at the board's June meeting.
