MERIDIAN -- Idaho’s congressional delegation congratulated this year's crop of service academy nominees at a special celebration Monday.

Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch and Congressman Raul Labrador were on hand for a reception at Meridian City Hall.

Each of the lawmakers nominated local high school students to attend prestigious military colleges, such as the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy (West Point), and the U.S. Naval Academy.

"It's very fierce competition, as you might guess, and there's very few slots available and so these young men and women are those who have really excelled in many different areas, and have really prepared themselves for this nomination," said Crapo.

Being nominated is just one-step towards attending a military academy, but it's certainly a big one.
