BOISE -- When you park your car, you might want to take a second look inside before walking away.

It could keep you from becoming the victim of a burglary.

Boise Police say as of Nov. 23, car burglaries are up 9 percent this year and they are happening in business, as well as residential areas.

High-targeted areas include neighborhoods in southeast Boise, west Boise and the downtown area.

Police spokeswoman Lynn Hightower says thieves may just walk around looking for purses, electronics and unlocked car doors.

In addition to locking those doors and keeping valuables out of sight, neighbors who look out for each other may keep burglars at bay.

“The residential areas getting hit right now don't have neighborhood watches. And that's significant, because in a neighborhood watch group, or a neighborhood watch neighborhood, folks typically have more communication with each other," said Hightower.

Hightower says that translates into better communication with police when a crime does happen.
