CALDWELL -- A southeastern Idaho county is adding 15 new jail beds and creating space for inmates to meet with their lawyers following a lawsuit alleging inmates were subjected to inhumane conditions because of overcrowding.

The Idaho Press-Tribune reports Canyon County jail officials and the American Civil Liberties Union, the group that sued in 2009, agree this is merely a temporary solution necessary made because efforts to build a newer, larger jail aren't proceeding quickly.

Canyon County voters have repeatedly rejected a new facility.

Canyon County Sheriff's Office Capt. Daren Ward called it a "tiny Band-Aid," but one that will save taxpayers some money.

That's because the county has been moving some inmates to separate facilities in other counties, costing about $12,000 last month.

These new beds will cost $4,000.
