CALDWELL -- Caldwell Police say 58-year-old Randall Clay died this morning after stepping in front of a train.
It happened at around 6:30 a.m. on Kimball Avenue.
The train, which was pulling many cars, was traveling through downtown Caldwell when the two engineers on board said they hit Clay.
Police aren't sure if it was a suicide or if the man was intoxicated, but they say there is history with him.
"He does have a significant history with the police department, a lot of the officers were familiar with him," said Caldwell Police Sgt. Joey Hoadley. "Just kind of stepped out in front of the train and unfortunately they weren't able to get stopped in time."
Caldwell Police are waiting on toxicology results to determine if Clay was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The train was traveling about 47 miles per hour at impact. It took about four blocks to come to a stop.
