BOISE -- The City of Trees is home to plenty of healthy activities, food and people. Now, it's home to a new title: one of the healthiest cities in America.
Men's Health and Women's Health magazines teamed up to do a survey of 100 cities across the country. Women's Health puts Boise as the number four healthiest city in the nation for women while Men's Health ranks the city as number five on its list for men.
Men's Health also mentioned Boise residents' predilection for growing their own food in places like community gardens as a factor that helped cultivate the city's high place on the list. They listed the benefits of exercise, social interaction with fellow gardeners and, of course, the fresh food.
The survey looked at health factors in 35 categories, ranging from air quality, exercise, employment and disease and mental health rates. Statistics came from sources like the CDC, the FBI and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
