AMERICAN FORK, Utah -- A 21-year-old Brigham Young University student buried in an avalanche Saturday died of her injuries Sunday afternoon in a Provo hospital.

Ashleigh Cox was snowshoeing in American Fork Canyon Saturday when she was caught in the slide.

Rescuers say Cox was buried face down in a creek for about 40 minutes before rescuers could pull her out. She was not breathing, but paramedics were able to restore her vital signs. She remained in critical condition until her death.

Utah officials closed some mountain roads after 14 avalanches were reported statewide over the weekend. The danger of avalanches ranges from high to extreme for the next several days.
