BOISE -- A Boise man is in jail after police say he purchased at least nine guns using gift cards he obtained after returning stolen merchandise from several sporting goods stores.
Officers arrested 34-year-old Daniel A. Hermosillo on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. They say he'd just left a west Boise sporting goods store carrying a gun he'd bought with gift cards.
Hermosillo allegedly began stealing merchandise from area sporting goods stores back in 2009. Boise police investigators say Hermosillo would return the stolen goods in exchange for gift cards he used to buy guns and other items.
When police searched Hermosillo's home, they seized 12 firearms, of which they believe at least nine were purchased through the scheme.
Police say the retail stores originally identified the theft problem, and police investigators pieced together the scheme.
“The suspect would steal from numerous retail stores and committed these thefts intermittently over the last few years making this a challenging investigation." said BPD Retail Crimes Supervisor Curt Crum. “It takes cooperation between retailers and law enforcement to make a real impact on this kind of crime, saving consumers money in the long run.”
Hermosillo faces felony grand theft and felony burglary charges.
Additional charges are pending.
