UPDATE 9:32 a.m. -- Police say 5-year-old Skylar Meldin Coulcer-Jarding is safe, and the suspect in his alleged kidnapping is in custody.

THE DALLES, Ore. -- An Amber Alert has been activated in Oregon after the reported kidnapping of a 5-year old boy. Police say the boy was kidnapped after a man broke into his home in The Dalles and assaulted someone with a hammer.

Oregon State Police report the abducted child is 5-year-old Skylar Meldin Coulcer-Jarding. Jarding is about 3'6", and 45 to 50 pounds, with sandy brown hair.

Police say he wears glasses, is cross-eyed, and has a speech impediment.

The 5-year-old was reportedly taken from his home at 5:40 a.m. Wednesday.

The suspect is identified as 36-year-old Brian Lester Depriest. Depriest is described as a white male approximately 6'5", 201 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans.

Police say Depriest knows the boy's mother. They say he broke into the boy's home, assaulted someone with a hammer, and then took the boy and left.

He's reportedly driving a stolen bluish-green 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier displaying Oregon license 229 BUK. The vehicle is said to be in fair condition and has a dolphin sticker near the back window.

Anyone seeing the vehicle, the suspect and or child are asked to call 9-1-1 or Oregon State Police dispatch center at 1-866-5AMBER5 (866-526-2375).
