BOISE-- Canadian-born rider Tara Whitten representing the American cycling team 'Tibco-To-the-Top' opened the Exergy Tour 2012 with a Prologue win in the opening stage on Thursday. Whitten clocked a time of just over 4':09" on the 3.2 km course for the win.
The Canadian National Team also had a solid showing with its riders claiming the remaining two spots on the podium. Gillian Carleton finished in second place for the Canadian team, and Clara Hughes took third.
Boise gold medalist Kristin Armstrong looked as if she would win the time trial until suffering a crash just after the halfway point. Armstrong got back on her bike and managed to finish the time trial in 11th place despite suffering a broken collar bone in the wreck. Armstrong's time was 4':15".
She will not be able to finish the Exergy Tour due to the injury.
The 2012 Exergy Tour moves on to Stage 1 in Nampa on Friday, with racers expected to start at 11 a.m.
