X Games qualifier to return to Boise in June

X Games officials say last year's inaugural Boise event was a big success, so they're bringing it back for another round.

BOISE - The X Games will return to Boise this summer for the second consecutive year, the city announced on Tuesday.

The Boise City Council has approved an agreement making Rhodes Skate Park the site of an X Games park qualifier, set for June 15 and 16.

The qualifier gives top athletes from around the world the opportunity to compete for an invitation to X Games Minneapolis, scheduled for July 19-22.

Hundreds of fans turned out at the inaugural event last June. X Games officials say that success was a big reason they wanted to bring the qualifier back to Boise this year.

“The Road to X Games: Boise Qualifier was an amazing event and it was great to see such strong attendance and community engagement, particularly for a first-year event,” said Ryan McGuinness, ESPN X Games Director of Event Development. “We couldn't have asked for a better host and look forward to continue building on that this year with the return to Rhodes Skate Park.”

City leaders said the city welcomes the international exposure that the prominent event brings.

“We’ll be able to make this year’s X Games even bigger and better," said Boise City Council President Lauren McLean. "And put Boise on a world stage while sharing what we already know, that we’re an amazing, active and vibrant city.”

The event is part of the Road to X Games series and features 60 invited athletes in three disciplines: Men’s Skateboard Park, Women’s Skateboard Park and BMX Park. Top finishers in Friday's elimination rounds will move on to the final rounds on Saturday.

Details and event information will be updated on the City of Boise's website.
