DALLAS - Former Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore confirmed to KTVB Sports Director Jay Tust on Friday that he has decided to retire from playing and go into coaching.

Numerous reports surfaced over the last month, citing sources that Moore intended to take over as the Cowboys' next quarterbacks coach.

Moore told KTVB that he has been serving as an assistant coach for approximately a month now.

"It wasn't easy," said Moore about his decision to retire, "but it felt like it was a really good opportunity and a nice transition with the familiarity of everything."

Moore spent a majority of the last three years on the Cowboys' 53-man roster. He played in three games - which included two starts - in his debut season in Dallas back in 2015. In his second and final start, Moore threw for 435 yards, the sixth-most in a single-game in franchise history.

The 29-year-old then spent the entire 2016 season on the injured reserve after fracturing his fibula during a preseason practice. He returned in 2017 and served as a backup quarterback until Week 8. The Cowboys released Moore on October 26, then later re-signed him to the practice squad.

Moore signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent out of college. He spent three seasons on the Lions' 53-man roster. However, he never appeared in a regular season game with the team.

Moore is still the NCAA's all-time leader in wins. He went 50-3 in four years as the starting quarterback at Boise State, and threw for a school-record 14,667 yards and 142 touchdowns.

Just last week, Boise State announced that Moore will be inducted into the school's Hall of Fame this spring. Moore plans on attending the ceremony, which will be held on campus at 5 p.m. April 13.
