Timberline senior hopes to be the next Leighton Vander Esch

Timberline High standout Dylan Herberg accepted a preferred walk-on spot with the Broncos on Thursday.

BOISE -- One of the best things about Leighton Vander Esch's story is its impact on local kids. In fact, the next Leighton Vander Esch could be on his way to Boise State.

Timberline High standout Dylan Herberg accepted a preferred walk-on spot Thursday.

"That's going to be a big thing for me, is almost defending the city of Boise," Herberg said. "There's going to be no better feeling at the end of the day if I'm a star for Boise State."

Last fall, Herberg led the Wolves with over 100 tackles, five interceptions and 15 tackles-for-loss. He passed on offers from FCS level schools just for the opportunity to be a Bronco.

"None of them just kind of came home like Boise State did," Herberg said.

Four years ago, Vander Esch was also a preferred walk-on at Boise State. Eventually, he earned a scholarship, a starting role on defense, and now he's set to become a first-round NFL Draft Pick.

Coincidentally... the two Idaho-natives play the position and have similar dreams.

"Ever since I found out that he was a walk-on, and how much he has grinded to get to where he is at today, he almost sets a precedent for every walk-on that's going to go there," Herberg said. "He's the kind of guy that you want to be."
