May 2018 Primary: County-by-county ballot breakdown
A look at what you'll find on your ballot when you head to the polls May 15.
On May 15, voters will take to the polls to decide county, legislative and statewide races, as well as ballot questions, including school funding requests.
This election is a primary, so your ballot will reflect candidates from your party of choice. The Republican and Constitution parties both have closed primaries, meaning only voters affiliated with those parties can vote for their respective candidates. The Democratic Party is holding an open primary, and anyone can vote for that party's candidates, so long as they have not voted on another party's ballot.
Below is a county-by-county breakdown, including legislative races in each county. You can look up your legislative district here.

City of Ontario
Retail Sales Tax
- Authorizes 1% retail sales tax for City of Ontario
Ballot Question:
Shall the City of Ontario impose, administer, regulate and collect a 1% sales tax on nonexempt retail sales? Summary: This measure authorizes the City of Ontario to impose, administer, regulate and collect a 1% sales tax (one cent per dollar) on non-exempt goods sold within Ontario. ltems taxed by the state are exempt (alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, utility/telecommunications and fuel). Other exempt items include registered motor vehicles, medical prescriptions, internet sales, certain lodging, sales involving government units, certain food or beverage sales, certain sales involving farmers/ranchers, and wholesale purchases. On September 26, 2017 the Ontario City Council enacted Ordinance 2729-2017 to impose, administer, regulate, collect and enforce a 1% sales tax on retail sales after January 1, 2018. The operative portions of the Sales Tax Ordinance were removed from the City Code by a referendum petition requiring public approval of the sales tax. This ballot measure would implement the sales tax 30 days after the election. Ontario estimates the sales tax would capture $2.4-4.8 million yearly and would be available to cover shortfalls in 2018-19 city budget. A "Yes" vote approves a new sales tax for Ontario. A "No" vote rejects a new sales tax.
City Charter Amendment
- Amends Ontario city charter to require sales tax increases above one percent to have voter approval
Ballot Question:
Should the Charter be amended to require any sales tax increases above 1% to have voter approval? Summary: In the May 15, 2018, election, there is a separate Ballot Measure which seeks voter approval of the 1% sales tax enacted by City of Ontario in Ordinance #2729-2017. lf that Ballot Measure is approved by the voters, the proposed City Charter amendment will impose a cap on the sales tax percentage; any future increases will require a vote of the people. The proposed Charter amendment adds Section 2.2 which reads as follows: "Section 2.2. On May 15, 2018, the voters approved by referendum a ballot measure allowing the City to impose a 1% sales tax. The City shall not increase the sales tax percentage beyond 1% without voter approval." lf the separate Ballot Measure fails, the vote on the Charter amendment will have no effect; the Charter will not be amended, regardless of the vote on the Charter amendment.
