BOISE - At fist glance, Micah Kester seems like your typical 3-year-old. But right now, he's fighting leukemia.
Micah has a long road ahead of him, but his family says the community has rallied around them in a powerful way.
Since his diagnosis in November, he's had multiple chemo treatments.
"He hasn't reacted to the chemo quite as much as they would have liked," said Micah's dad, Greg Kester. "We've got some other treatments that we have to go through, and a bone marrow transplant at Seattle Children's hospital."
Finding a bone marrow donor for Micah will be their first priority.
"You are relying on the generosity of strangers," said Micah's mom, Denice Kester.
"Pretty stressful being in a situation where you're not sure if you are going to be able to find a donor so the more people who are on the registry the better," Greg added.
That's where Be The Match comes in. Greg's coworkers started a cheek swab registration drive in honor of Micah's battle.
"Between that and our church, Crossroads Community in Nampa, and online over 100 people got signed up," Greg said.
"It's kind of indescribable," Denice said of the response. "You just kind of lack the words, it's incredible."
But the Kesters say what happened in their neighborhood, outside their house on a Sunday night this month, truly blew them away.
They thought they were shooting a video to promote Be The Match.
"We were here thinking we were just redoing, shooting a couple of clips and they had a teleprompter set up and we were reading off of it," the Kesters explained.
A group of friends enlisted the help of the Praynksters to light the night for Micah, and to pray for a miracle.
"It was overwhelming and humbling," Greg said. "Our front lawn was full of people, friends and family and people we don't know."
The donations came pouring in to help with mounting expenses. Friends and family donated over $12,000.
"It's so special to know how many people love him and care for him and are praying for him," Denice said.
"It means so much to us and to Micah," Greg added.
