Local businesses gearing up for Valentine's Day

The week of Valentine's Day is one of the busiest times of year for flower shops and bakeries.

EAGLE - Flowers, cards and sweet treats.

Chances are you're probably giving your valentine one those.

Because those are traditional gifts for the holiday they're in high demand.

"Red roses are obviously the biggest," said Dorothy Miller, owner of Hope Blooms Flower and Things.

The week of Valentine's Day is one of the busiest times of year for flower shops and bakeries.

"Valentines week is awesome," Miller said. "It's one full week of just craziness."

"We had a guy last year who was really cute. He was like 'Okay I got the cupcakes. I got the cards. I got the flowers. I got chocolates.' I go 'I think you’re good," said Margaret Lagerstrom, owner of Lilly Jane's Cupcakes.

Handling the holiday craziness takes a lot of preparation. For Dorothy Miller that means starting to plan a year in advance. Everything from ordering extra flowers to make the bouquets to even having enough drivers to make hundreds of deliveries.

"We can't do 300 deliveries without the extra drivers," Miller said. "So we call family, friends cousins, neighbors anybody who's out there that wants to deliver comes and helps us."

Lagerstrom has been making 500 cupcakes a day since Friday. That means by Valentine's Day she's made 2,000 cupcakes in less than a week.

"Our biggest seller is definitely our cupcakes," she said. "Red velvet, salted caramel, we do half baked, we do huckleberry hounds."

It's a lot of work and planning that both women said is well worth it.

"Making people smile and hearing why they're buying cupcakes," Lagerstrom said. "We call it cupcake therapy. You get to hear about why they're buying it and who they're buying it for."

"It's the people," Miller said. "It's our customers. We just love that. That's my favorite part about it is just being able to help them express an emotion that's kind of it all year long. It's about the community."
