DK Donuts scores with Kentucky coach

Kentucky head basketball coach John Calipari has made it a routine to stop into the local donut shop.

BOISE - One local donut shop is in the spotlight thanks to the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

Kentucky and Hall of Fame basketball coach John Calipari has found an interest in DK Donuts, a local donut shop located on the corner of 13th and State Street.

Coach Cal and roughly five of his assistants have made it a routine to stop into the Boise donut shop to enjoy a little sugar rush each morning.

“Long knows how to make a donut,” said Calipari.

The Hall of Fame coach stumbled across DK Donuts for the first time a few days ago while in search for a cup of coffee.

“We were going to mass and on the way back I said, ‘stop there, we'll grab a coffee’ and when I walked in and saw this and the five of us just went to work,” said Calipari.

KTVB caught the coach on Friday coming into the local shop for the third straight day.

“Now, I'm not a donut eater. I go to a coffee shop, but I looked at these donuts and I saw the cooker in the back and I said, ‘they're making these right on site’ and I just came in and said, 'come on, what do you have here,’” said Calipari.

What DK Donuts has is the maple bacon bar.

“Strips of bacon, I've never heard of such a thing,” said Calipari.

The sugar providing a little extra jolt of energy for the NCAA tournament, where the Wildcats are coming off a five-point win over Davidson.

“Like Long was saying, it was really close. So, I need more donuts to get me going more,” said Calipari.

The coach not only praised the donuts at a news conference earlier this week, but even tweeted out to his nearly 2 million followers about his newfound love.

“This guy got me coming back to eating donuts. I don't eat donuts, but they look at my body and they say he eats donuts,” said Calipari.

The news of Coach Calipari’s hot spot has reached the Wildcat faithful as it’s become a must-see for Kentucky basketball fans.

“We have a lot of Kentucky fans come over here,” said DK Donuts owner Angkearot Long.

Long himself is even a Kentucky fan.

“I've been watching his team for a long, long time,” said Long.

A donut shop that’s now also being watched by everyone across the country.

“I'm not sure about it, but my family texted me the first time the statement coming out and they say, 'oh yeah, you on the news now.' I say, 'oh, really.' So, I'm really happy about that,” said Long.

Although, DK donuts may be the new hot spot for basketball fans, those who live in Boise say it’s no secret.

“They're the best donuts around. They're just always so fresh and just kinda melt in your mouth,” said Courtney Rosenkoetter.
