3 dead in fiery U.S. 95 crash

Three people were killed in a violent head-on wreck on U.S. Highway 95 in Adams County.

COUNCIL, Idaho -- Three people were killed in a violent head-on wreck on U.S. Highway 95 in Adams County.

The wreck happened at 8:10 p.m. Wednesday evening south of Council.

According to Idaho State Police, a 2014 Dodge Ram 2500 driven by George Manessis, 73, of Council was northbound on U.S. 95 when Manessis attempted to pass another northbound vehicle.

The Dodge Ram sideswiped an oncoming 2006 GMC Yukon with a utility trailer being driven by Dile Monson, 72, of Burley, sending the SUV and its five occupants off the road about 30 feet. The Ram then smashed head-on into a second vehicle, a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by James Kolesar, 46, of Coeur d'Alene that was southbound.

The Silverado burst into flames, and was quickly engulfed. Kolesar and passenger Daniel Burton, 22, of Coeur d'Alene were killed, police say. Manessis also died.

Monson and the other occupants of the Yukon were not injured.

The crash blocked U.S. 95 in both directions for seven hours.

The crash remains under investigation.
