CWI opens 'Food For Thought' pantries

The supplies, which include hygiene items and non-perishable food like oatmeal and noodles, are donated through the Idaho Foodbank network.

NAMPA -- The College of Western Idaho held a ribbon cutting for their brand new "food for thought" pantry, designed to offset hunger on campus.

The new location inside the Nampa campus' Academic Building marks the fifth pantry on campus.

CWI Dean of Students Jenn Crowder said the school hopes the pantry will ease the burden for students who are struggling financially or dealing with food insecurity.

"If they are struggling to find food, they are going to choose food over a textbook," she said. "If we can help bridge that gap, a cup of oatmeal for that student to eat that day, we are helping to live our mission in being student-centered.”

The food pantry is open to anyone who needs it, officials say. The supplies, which include hygiene items and non-perishable food like oatmeal and noodles, are donated through the Idaho Food Bank network.

Crowder said the school hopes to monitor the program and expand it to better serve their population.

"This is just one way that we can be a conduit to those social services for our students," she said.
