Caught on camera: Porch pirate steals from Boise home

The suspect is shown in surveillance video stealing packages from the front porch of a Boise home.

UPDATE: Boise police said late Friday that the juvenile suspect has been identified and is cooperating with officers.

BOISE -- Caught on camera! Members of a Boise family say they watched a thief steal packages right off their front porch while they were out of town Thursday.

Now, the Boise Police Department is asking for the public's help to identify the "porch pirate."

The Sawin family tells KTVB they had cameras installed right on their porch, to keep an eye out for something like this.

In the video, a man in a purple shirt and black baseball cap casually walks up to the Sawin home in broad daylight and takes their things.

Through a mobile app, the family originally saw that they got their expected delivery, but a short time later they checked the camera again and realized the packages had disappeared.

So the family went through the full video sequence and realized they hadn't just vanished, they were stolen.

With the suspected porch pirate caught on video, the family says there is still time for him to do the right thing.

"Pretty simple, turn yourself in to Boise police or the nearest police station. I think there would be a lot more leniency from a judge rather than being on the run,” said Jason Sawin.

If you were curious about what the thief got away with, the family tells KTVB that one package had an amp RV extension cord, and the other one had vitamins, ear plugs and a nice set of noise-canceling headphones.

The family says they want other homeowners to take note of how useful the video surveillance systems can be.
