You Can Grow It: Garden clubs

BOISE - Now that summer is officially just a few days away, our gardens are probably getting into full swing.  And whether you’re growing fruit and vegetables, or flowers and shrubs, you’re part of one of the most popular hobbies in the country.

This week, garden master Jim Duthie shares pictures viewers have sent us of their gardens, and tells you about how you can become a member of a garden club near you.

Gardening is one of the most popular pastimes in America.  For many of us, it’s a way to beautify our home landscapes, while for others it’s a way to supplement their food supply. But for almost all gardeners, it can be a passion, and a relaxing, creative way to connect to nature, in your own backyard.

There are dozens of organized nonprofit garden clubs and societies here in Idaho, like the Boise Bonsai Society, made up of people just like you, who want to share their knowledge of gardening, and learn from others, and it doesn’t matter whether you’re a beginner or an expert gardener.

The Nampa Garden Club was formed in 1949. Another club, called By Trowel and Error, was organized in Nampa last year.

The goal of these clubs, and others like them, is to create, promote and further interest in horticulture, gardening, civic beautification and natural resource conservation, through educational, charity and community improvement projects.  As part of that goal, both of the Nampa clubs are working together to develop a community garden.

If you’re interested in joining a gardening club, it’s easy to find one close to where you live.  Just go online to the Garden Clubs of Idaho website.  From there, go to find a club, and select southwestern Idaho.  You’ll find a number of clubs from around the state.

If you’ve got something in your garden you’d like us to see, send us your pictures to jduthie@ktvb.com.
