BOISE -- A three vehicle accident on eastbound I-84 caused quite a backup Saturday afternoon.
The accident happened around 1 p.m. between the Orchard Street and Vista Avenue exits.
Traffic was backed up for about two hours as crews worked to clear the debris.
Gary Wilson, 56, of Boise, driving a gold 2004 Toyota Tundra, attempted to merge into traffic as a green 1997 Toyota Corolla, driven by Hannah Barnes, 16, of Boise, slowed due to traffic conditions. A semi, driven by Mark Livers, 40, of Randle, Washington, was following both vehicles and was unable to stop before striking Wilson's vehicle, pushing the pickup into Barnes' vehicle.
Investigators call it a domino effect that could have been avoided.
“You have a combination here,” said Sgt. Sheldon Kelley with Idaho State Police. “You have the driver entering the interstate who has to yield to traffic already on the interstate and vehicles traveling either too fast or too close to the vehicle in front of them, unable to stop in time when something like that happens."
Barnes was transported to St. Luke's Boise with non-life threatening injuries.
The crash is under investigation.
