BOISE -- What a difference a year makes.
The Idaho Police Officer Training Academy won 40-27 House approval on Tuesday for a $5 fee increase.
That's after a $1.50 proposal died in the same chamber in 2011 in a vote that set the tone for last year's session: No new taxes or fees.
The Spokesman-Review reports that crime-fee collections that help fund the training academy in Meridian, Idaho are on the decline.
POST, as the academy is called, will be the beneficiary of the hike that boosts the current $10 fee per felony or misdemeanor conviction to $15.
Rep. Darrell Bolz of Caldwell championed the bill, arguing it's the people who commit the crimes who will be paying the fee -- not taxpayers.
It now goes to the Senate.
