Local site pushes local businesses

BOISE -- Some retailers in Boise are thanking a Web site for bringing them more customers.

It's called DealChirp and it was established to inspire people to spend locally.

Only local stores can advertise sales or publish coupons on it.

In the month it's been around, merchants who signed up for it say it has done nothing but good for business.

Lindsay Schramm of North End Organic Nursery said signing up with DealChirp was a no brainer.

Every week, she gets ten new customers directly from the Web site.

"It translates into more people being aware that we're here and therefore people walking in the door just to see what we have," Schramm said.

Her business is young. It's only been around a month, the same amount of time DealChirp has been around,  which pushes for people to spend in their own backyard.

"Buying local is the new stimulus package," Brian Cronin of DealChirp said. "It's really all about keeping more dollars circulating within this economy. There are a myriad of benefits from keeping tax dollars here, to requiring less infrastructure for helping businesses, to helping out our friends and neighbors who own small businesses in the area."

Schramm uses the site often.

A sale she posted on Saturday was already viewed by more than thirty people Sunday.

"To me as a small company that's a lot of people getting exposed to what we do," Schramm said.

Mike Teschner owns Eco Lounge, a ski and snowboard shop in Boise.

He's been around five years but in the last month, DealChirp has sent more than two dozen new people through his doors.

"Everybody has brand loyalty, has their shop loyalty and we're always very encouraged when we see new faces," Teschner said.

Business owners said during the holiday season the extra attention from DealChirp has helped.

"That's probably our biggest draw," Teschner said. "People come in and they're like, ‘We just like the little shop. We want to help the shops that are part of the community, we just love your store.’ So we embrace them."

In the first week, 1,400 deal-seekers visited DealChirp’s site.

Now, more than 4,000 people have checked it out.

For a Web site that's been around a month, the owners said that is a great response and they said people are coming back to the site regularly.

And of course, that makes businesses happy because they're seeing the benefits at the cash register.

Nearly 50 local businesses are advertising on DealChirp.
