BOISE -- A federal judge has approved an agreement between the ACLU and Canyon County detailing what must be done to improve conditions at the county jail.
The consent decree was approved by U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill on Thursday. It effectively closes the lawsuit ACLU-Idaho brought on behalf of six inmates who said they were being sickened because the jail had poor ventilation, plumbing, sanitation and recreation.
In the consent decree, the county agreed to take several measures to address the problems outlined in the lawsuit, including performing routine maintenance on drains, having the ventilation system inspected and repaired if needed, improving cleaning procedures and ensuring used razors aren't re-issued to other inmates.
The county also agreed to have the jail inspected every six months to verify compliance.
