REXBURG -- A Rexburg woman says she believes the Rexburg City Council violated the state's open meeting laws as it prepared to appoint a new mayor, and she's asked local and state officials to investigate.

Maria Nate sent a letter to city attorney Stephen Zollinger, Madison County Prosecutor Sid Brown and Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden, saying she believes council members tried to skirt open meeting rules by having a series of private, one-on-one conversations over who should replace former Mayor Shawn Larsen.

The council appointed Mayor Richard Woodland to the post last week.

Council members say no such meetings occurred and that there is no truth to Nate's claims.
