BOISE - A series of tubs at a hot springs in the Idaho backcountry have been torn out.

The district ranger says the pools were removed using sledge hammers.

The concrete pools were built on Forest Service land by one man without a permit. The pools have become popular with recreationists in recent years as a place to stop off and enjoy the naturally warm water between Silver Creek and Crouch.

The series of tubs were built into the hillside to take advantage of the cascading warm water.

District Ranger John Erickson says the hillside has now been returned to a more natural state.

The man who built the tubs was punished and served community service.

"He was very cooperative. He was a well-intentioned individual. But what he did was a violation of the U.S. Forest Service," said Erickson, earlier this month.
