BOISE -- Idaho prison officials say the execution of Paul Ezra Rhoades for his role in the 1987 murders of two women cost the state more than $50,000.
Rhoades died by lethal injection Nov. 18 at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution, marking the state's first execution in 17 years. Idaho Department of Correction Director Brent Reinke issued a statement Friday saying the execution cost $53,411.
Reinke says $25,583 went to cover overtime his staff accrued while preparing for and carrying out the execution. While $27,828 went toward operating costs, such as medical supplies, equipment rentals and meals.
This is in comparison to the $57,574 the Oregon Department of Corrections spent in preparation for Gary Haugen's execution. Two weeks before Haugen was schedule to be executed, Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber temporary postponed it.
Rhoades was convicted in the kidnapping and murders of 34-year-old Susan Michelbacher and 21-year-old Stacy Dawn Baldwin.
He was also sentenced to life in prison for the murder of 20-year-old Nolan Haddon.
