IDAHO FALLS - Contractors in eastern Idaho say more people are choosing to remodel their homes rather than buy new ones during the troubled economy.

James Miller owns Kitchen Tune-Up in Ammon.

He says more people are inclined to fix up their current homes rather than risk losing money on buying another one.

Jared Finn owns Green Acres Home Improvement in Idaho Falls.

He tells the Post Register that new construction jobs have dropped by about 90 percent in the past year while remodeling projects have increased 50 percent.

He says a lot of people don't have the equity in their home like they did a few years ago to finance buying a new home.
