Charter School Commission meets over school's use of religious texts

 

BOISE -- The state Public Charter School Commission is dedicating a special meeting Monday to scrutinize a publicly funded Idaho school's use of religious texts.

Nampa Classical Academy is locked in a dispute with the agency that authorizes and governs more than half of the public charter schools in Idaho.

The school sued the commission in September, charging the state with illegally forbidding it from using the Bible in the classroom.

The Charter School Commission warned school leaders earlier this month to follow state rules.

Nampa Classical Academy, the state's third biggest charter school with 550 students, opened this fall.

Since October, however, seven board members have resigned amid disputes with a family member of the school's founder.

Monday's meeting begins at 9 a.m. in Boise.
