Soroptimist International of Boise held a networking reception for non-profit organizations which served as an "exposition of local women's services". Mayor Dave Bieter presented the March 8, 2010 International Women's Day of Boise Proclamation.
Nicole Cantrill of SI Boise presented Bea Black, Executive Director and Bev LaChance, Deputy Director of the WCA with a check for $2000.00 that they plan to use for childcare supplies.
2010 marks the 99th year of International Women’s Day celebrations.
In 1911, International Women's Day was established to honor the movement for women’s rights and to assist in achieving universal suffrage for women.
Soroptimist International of Boise joined in celebration with Soroptimist clubs around the world with the 2010 theme, “Equal rights, equal opportunities: Progress for all”
The United Nations recognized March 8th as International Women’s Day, citing that securing peace and social progress and the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms requires the active participation, equality and development of women; and to acknowledge the contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace and security
The day’s symbolism means it is an occasion to review how far women have come in their struggle for equality, peace and development while also providing the opportunity to unite, network and mobilize for meaningful change
