ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A retired prosecutor from the Casey Anthony murder trial is taking aim at the Florida mother's attorneys in his new book, calling her lead counsel "smarmy."

Jeff Ashton says Jose Baez was careless with facts and encouraged Anthony to not cooperate with investigators searching for her missing 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. Anthony was acquitted in July of first-degree murder.

Baez says in a statement that Ashton's characterizations are false.

Anthony could have faced the death penalty if she had been convicted. Ashton says in "Imperfect Justice: Prosecuting Casey Anthony," that he didn't think jurors would go for the death penalty. The book goes on sale Tuesday.

Ashton also says that toward the end of the trial, her attorneys tried to persuade her to accept a plea deal but the 25-year-old refused.
