Martial Arts Sensei is a Hero to Local Kids
Last night I featured a local man, martial arts instructor Pon Inthathirath as this weeks Seven's Hero. He moved here in 1999, and he opened Dragon Bushido Dojo in Boise. He teaches adults and he also teaches kids - as young as four years old!
A Boise father, Jeff Parrish, sent me an email to tell me about Sensei Pon Inthathirath and his impact on his 7 year old son:
I wanted to let you know about a program that is helping kids in Boise. The program is taught at the Dragon Bushido Dojo www.dragonbushidodojo.com. Their speciality is working with kids. The Sensei's name is Pon Inthathirath.
The background story is a personal one for me. My 7 year old son, Blake had been experiencing outbursts in school last year. He is a great kid that was having a difficult time articulating his frustrations and controlling his temper. I decided to enroll him in some karate classes to give him a chance to learn some discipline. 2 months later and he is a different kid. Pon has become a mentor to my son.
After spending some time with Pon I learned about a program he taught in Minnesota. A doctor started a trial for program for children with ADHD. He told Pon to teach the children karate in lieu of giving them medication. Initially they started the trial with 10 children and it grew to 200+ children in a short period of time with amazing results. Pon then moved to Boise and continued the same curriculum here. I am grateful for what he has done for my son and I know I am not alone.
I think it would be of value for the community to know about this alternative to medication for children with behavioral challenges.
So, I went to the karate studio myself - and I met Blake Parrish. I saw him in action with Sensei, and it was pretty incredible to see the way this little boy respects him - and to see his new love for martial arts. Jeff tells me Blake has had a great year in school so far, with no problems. He's only been doing martial arts for a few months now, but it seems to already be making a difference in his young life! He seems to be able to better control his feelings, and walk away from confrontational situations.
Watch the story, so you can see it for yourself!
If you have someone you'd like to nominate for a Seven's Hero, send me an e-mail and let me know about it!
