It's been a fixture in downtown Boise for years and years - and this week we got word that the Macy's in downtown Boise is closing.

61 employees will lose their jobs, but they may have the option of finding work elsewhere in the company. A company spokesman says it's always difficult to close stores - but if they're not performing well, the company has to streamline. Downtown Macy's is one of those casualties. The other stores the retailer plans to close are in Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey and in Missoula, Montana.

The store will begin final clearance sales this Sunday. It will officially close in two months. Macy's owns the store in downtown Boise. It will be putting the building up for sale soon.

I mentioned it on my Facebook page yesterday - and many of you had comments about it... here are some of them:

Christy Messina:
Oh no this is so sad :(

Mike Murphy:
Soon downtown will be nothing but bars and pretentious restaurants.

Holli High Woodings:
I will miss it too! And I was hoping they would remodel and put a MAC in there someday...

Dennis J Smith:
Department stores are an important key to any downtown. I hope we can bring another retailer downtown. I know I'd love to see Nordstrom's store in Boise. Maybe even a Nordstrom's Rack.

Cristi McMahan:
OOOOH...Nordstroms would be nice. I highly doubt it though because its too much like Dillards.

Mary Puccio:
It's always been such a pleasure to shop at this store - low key and comfortable and nice employees. For many years, visiting Santa there was always such a pleasant experience, too. Sad to see it go.

Dennis J Smith:
Let's put an IKEA in downtown! :)

Annie Smith:

Cindy Zuzel McClaskey:

Sad to see another downtown Boise store leave!

Lillian Kurek:
This breaks my heart. The downtown doesn't need anymore closures. It hurts those of us who are trying to keep our businesses open.

Dennis J Smith:
Keep in mind that Macy's opened a brand new store in Nampa. That store is almost twice the size of the previous Karcher Mall location. So at least they are still connected to the Boise market.

Max Mohammadi:
We all love down town Macy's and it's crew. Corp.Macy's doesn't understand basic principals. Good luck DT macys crew!

Roxann Cleverly:
I have heard that this year is going to get even worse then last year. I sure hope not. I'm wishing for the best

Dennis J Smith:
It will be if we all have negative attitudes. I personally think 2010 is going to be my best year ever. I won't let negative people and attitudes get in my way.

Roxann Cleverly:

Things are tough on people but if we all think positive then we can make it. :)

Dennis J Smith:
We can. We have before. It's just a bump in the road. Downtown Boise isn't going away, we still have Macy's and tons of other shopping. Should have lived here in the early 80's when we didn't even have a mall. :)

Jane Reiser:
So grateful to hear that the Corp. will try to transfer them to other thing we know to be a constant is change.
