The countdown to Vancouver is almost over...
Tonight is the Opening Ceremony for the 2010 Winter Games!
All the action starts on KTVB at 5pm. Did you know, this will be the first ever INDOOR Opening Ceremony. Olympic officials in Vancouver have been planning this for seven years now! 55,000 people are expected to fill BC Place - which is the venue for the ceremony. Hundreds of millions will watch on TV! Including you and me.
BC Place in Vancouver
What we don't know, is exactly WHAT will happen tonight. Carolyn Holly and Mark Johnson are in Vancouver - and they tell us everything is a well guarded secret. How will organizers decide to light the Olympic flame? More importantly, WHO will light it? There is speculation it could be Wayne Gretzky. The hockey legend is considered the greatest player ever in Canada's most cherished sport. But who knows? We'll just have to wait and see tonight!
Each delegation will enter the venue (BC Place) in alphabetical order, with two exceptions. I didn't know some of this stuff: Greece, by tradition, always enters first. The loudest cheer will be saved for Canada which, as the host country, will enter last.
(We'll certainly be cheering loudly here at home for the 12 Idaho athletes who are competing!)
Each contingent will be dressed in official uniform. Another important aspect of the Opening Ceremony is the Olympic Oath - which will be taken by just one athlete and one official.
