Last night in Houston, Coach Chris Petersen was awarded the Paul 'Bear' Bryant Award for the second time in his career! The award has been given out every year since 1986 - to the BEST college football coach in the nation. It's voted on by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
Petersen is the first two-time winner of the award - and he beat out Alabama's Nick Saban who led his team to the National Championship. The Award is named in honor of longtime Alabama coach Paul "Bear" Bryant - he died of a heart attack in 1983.
Coach Pete accepting his award last night in Houston
Last night, our Mark Johnson text messaged Coach Pete to congratulate him on the honor - and being the great guy that he is... he sent Mark a text back. He said:
"Thanks, I am very blessed, and lucky, and I mean that."
As Bronco fans, we don't like to think about it - but Coach Pete is highly coveted by other programs across the country. Recently, he was rumored to have been a candidate for the head coach openings at USC and Tennessee. The good news for all of us is, he seems to love Boise State and he just agreed to another 5 year contract. Hooray!
After the Fiesta Bowl win over TCU, the Broncos are now ranked 4th on the AP Top 25 poll - and our team will only lose four seniors next year. That means our 2010 team is going to be STRONG!
Who out there is ready for another winning season? I know I am!
Congratulations to Coach Pete, and GO BRONCOS!
