My boy is in grizzly bear country!
Actually, he's not a boy --- Colby is a 26-year-old 'buckaroo' who works on a ranch between Libby and Kallispell, Montana.
In the last couple of weeks, Colby's work has found him on horseback in a river trying to save a baby calf --- not to mention his own skin.
That was an experience in itself!
However, Colby's latest encounter while protecting cattle raised the hair on the back of my neck when he told me about it on the phone.
The actual grizzly, taken via cell phone pic
Colby came face to face with a grizzly bear.
He was out working with the cattle and the guests when the encounter happened. Apparently horses smell bears because that’s when the grizzly came by to check out the herd. That’s also when the ranch manager started pushing the 'griz' away from the cattle. Colby joined in -- but he was on horse back running toward the bear. That Griz ran too, but then turned around and got on its hind legs with paws up, staring the two Buckaroo’s and their horses down. This cat and mouse, or should I say man vs. griz went on until the big bad bear finally ran away.
Here’s the deal: Colby didn’t know it was a grizzly bear until after the whole encounter was over!
He told me it had the biggest head he had ever seen on a bear, but he didn’t notice the other part of the bear that you would want to know about if you encountered one. This one had a hump on it’s back….making it indeed a griz!
