One of my producers yelled across the newsroom last night that Michelle Obama is going to be speaking at my alma mater. She's the featured graduation speaker for Oregon State University this year.
I think that's awesome.
No matter your political views, having the first lady as your graduation speaker is memorable.
Do you remember who spoke or what they even said when you graduated from college? I asked three evening newsroom employees that question.
The University of Oregon and Washington State grads quickly said they couldn't recall their graduation speakers.
Our Boise State alum said she doesn't remember who spoke, but Dr. Bob Kustra was on the stage.
All I remember of my college graduation was being extremely nervous about whether they were really going to call my name! I mean, I had the graduation gown on and all the family was there. But, it still gives me the chills today to think about how insecure I was that day, wondering if I had really fulfilled all of my requirements. Luckily for me I had secured a newsroom job two days before graduation, so I think OSU just wanted to get me on my way!
Anyway, back to Mrs. Obama. She will speak at three college graduation ceremonies this spring, including Virginia Tech and North Carolina A&T.
As far as Oregon State. It will be a family affair for Michelle Obama. Her brother Craig is the head basketball coach for the Beavers.
