Last year I asked our news staff to help me kick off a "What did you do for your summer vacation" section on this blog. You seemed to love it. So, I'm bringing it back.

Read on about our digital media producer John Masters, and his weekend at one of the biggest golf tournaments of the year!

John Masters:

Although summer doesn’t officially start until today, my 12-year-old daughter Mandy and I got a good start to the vacation season with a trip to Northern California this past weekend.

The highlight of the trip was spending Thursday and Friday at the U.S. Open Golf Championship at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. I went with my dad and daughter on Thursday.

Security is much tighter these days for the open. No cameras or cell phones were allowed, so we did not document it, but thoroughly enjoyed our time together.

My daughter’s favorite professional golfer is Steve Stricker, so we made it our mission to see Steve and some of the other big names on the tour – Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ricky Fowler, just to name a few.

Unfortunately, Mandy sprained her ankle the night before we went to California, so walking on the hilly course was an even bigger challenge. We initially found a spot on a grassy hill next the 8th green, which has an amphitheater feel to it.

We arrived at the course just after 11 a.m. Many of the big names had early tee times Thursday so we made it just in time to see Tiger, Phil and others play their final hole – number 8.

After lunch we set on the course to find another hole where Steve and Ricky would play through.  I really enjoyed seeing the top 3 ranked players – Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood – in one group.

After leaving the course I was reminded of why I don’t live in Northern California anymore.  Don’t miss that traffic.

Saturday we took a picnic lunch to the beach in Carmel and Mandy tried riding a boogie board for the first time.  She complained the ocean water was much too cold for her liking.

I spent Father’s Day with my dad and daughter watching the golf and enjoying a steak barbecue.

It really doesn’t get any better than that!
