I'm working on a story about women and heart disease.
In fact the two women you see with me in the above picture are both personally involved in fighting what is now the number one killer of women.
Denice Champlain was just 45 years old when she got her heart first checked out. She was really ill. She told me that she was extremely tired, dizzy and short of breath. Guess what her doctor at that time told her? Go home its stress! No it wasn't it. Denice has three blocked arteries!
Dr. Beth Malasky, also pictured above, says that type of misdiagnosis happens all the time. She's here to make sure that stops. Dr. Malasky is heading up the new St. Alphonsus Women's Heart Care program. It's for women only and its aimed at giving them comprehensive heart care. That includes everything from diagnosis, to treatment to exercise and education.
The hospital just opened the program this week.
It appears to be a gigantic step forward for women in our community.
I'll tell you more about it Thursday night on the News at Ten.
