A brilliant young Boise man has come up with a super idea to get food to those in need.

I met Carl Harmon-Vellotti while reporting on the Treasure Valley Math and Science Center.  It's one of Boise's Magnet Schools that draws the best-of-the-best when it comes to science and math courses. His words to me at the time:  "Being smart is cool."

Well, this 17 year old is doing a very smart thing right now and cool one too.

He's holding a "Checkmate Hunger" campaign this Saturday.

Carl is a chess player who is competing in the state chess championship tournament in Boise.

Here is how you can help him.

Carl is accepting pledges of one can of food for each game that he wins.  There is a maximum of five games that he could win.

Through, hopefully, many pledges, he hopes to collect enough cans of food to make a significant dent in the needs of the Idaho Food Bank.

Please look at this flyer so that you can contact Carl through his email or phone number.
