BOISE -- The Boise State offense squeaked out a 22-19 victory over the defense in front of a school-record 17,123 fans at the annual Blue and Orange Spring Scrimmage on Saturday at Bronco Stadium.

Junior quarterback Joe Southwick threaded the needle to senior Chris Potter on a pass over the middle for an 18-yard score on the final play off the scrimmage to provide the difference maker.

"It came down to the end and Joe and I happened to be on the same page," said Potter.  "To end on that note gives us a good feeling and gives us confidence."

With a four-way race going on at quarterback, Southwick made the most of his opportunity completing 14-of-19 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown.

"Joe always does a good job of taking a leadership role.  He does a great job of communicating with everyone on the offense," said Potter.

True freshman quarterback Nick Patti also impressed.  Working with the No. 2 offense, Patti completed 4-of-8 passes for 60 yards, including an impressive 35-yard touchdown toss to redshirt freshman Troy Ware.

"That was pretty impressive," said runningback Drew Wright.  "He's a good quarterback, he was highly recruited and for his very first scrimmage he showed up."

"He might be the most impressive guy in the quarterback race right now," added head coach Chris Petersen.  "Being here for such a short period of time and us throwing as much as we did (at him) - he's able to call a snap count, call a cadence, call the play and then execute."

As for the other two quarterbacks in the race, sophomore Grant Hedrick and redshirt freshman Jimmy Laughrea struggled to find a rhythm.  Hedrick - who also saw time with the No. 1 offense - completed just 2-of-6 passes for 5 yards, while Laughrea hit on 3-of-7 attempts for 13 yards.

Still, coach Petersen made it clear the starting position is still up for grabs.

"We've told them they're all capable of being the quarterback here," said Petersen following the scrimmage.  "We'll look at (the game film) and let them keep competing in the fall and figure it out as soon as we can."

On the defensive side of the ball, both sophomore linebacker Blake Renaud and sophomore safety Jeremy Ioane came up with interceptions.  Ioane's came on a trick play when the quarterback lateraled the ball down the line of scrimmage to Potter.  The wideout was hit trying to throw and Ioane was able to pick off the pass along the sideline, barely keeping a foot inbounds.

Moments later, Renaud then stepped in front of a Hedrick pass when the linebacker dropped into zone-coverage and the signal-caller lost track of him.

"Both those guys have had very good springs, so I think you got a little taste of that today," said coach Petersen about Ioane and Renaud.  "It was just one day, but both guys have taken the next step this spring."

With the victory, the Broncos offense was rewarded with teriyaki bowls and postgame showers, while the defense went home hungry and sweaty.

Boise State will wrap up their spring schedule with their final practice on Monday.  The Broncos will open the 2012 season at Michigan State on August 31.

NOTES: Coach Petersen said that senior runningback Raphiel Lambert will miss the upcoming season after re-injuring the same ACL he tore as a freshman.  Petersen mentioned they would have to "check the rules" in terms of applying for a sixth-year of eligibility for Lambert, however, Petersen sounded rather skeptical they could get one. ... Tight end Chandler Koch was the only player to noticeable leave the field during the spring game due to injury.  Coach Petersen said Koch suffered an sprained ankle. ... Three runningbacks suited up for the scrimmage, but only two saw action.  D.J. Harper - as coach Petersen announced on Wednesday - was held out for precautionary reasons, meaning former walk-ons Drew Wright and Phillip Hogan rotated in and out. ... Former Boise State lineman Billy Winn was in attendance at the scrimmage.  Winn - who is expected to be an early to mid-round pick in the NFL Draft - said he has completed all of his team workouts.
