BOISE -- Redshirt junior Joe Southwick will be the starting quarterback when the Boise State Broncos take on Michigan State on Friday, Aug. 31st.

Broncos Head Coach Chris Petersen made the widely-anticipated announcement during the team's final pre-season press conference on Sunday.

Petersen said he told Southwick he got the job just a couple of days ago.

Four BSU quarterbacks had been competing for the starting position throughout 2012's fall practices.

Petersen said Southwick earned the starting role, describing his knowledge of the team's offense as "inside and out."

Peterson also announced redshirt sophomore Grant Hedrick will be 2012's backup QB, ahead of redshirt freshman Jimmy Laughrea. Petersen said he'd likely redshirt true freshman QB Nick Patti.

Southwick came to Boise from Danville, California, and redshirted his first season. As a redshirt freshman, he saw playing time in eight games in special situations, completing 17 of 24 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown.

As a redshirt sophomore, Southwick played a backup role to starting senior Kellen Moore. Southwick played in eight games and completed 23-of-30 passes for 198 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also rushed the ball seven times for 16 yards.

Southwick will make his first career start as a Bronco on August 31 when Boise State opens the season on the road at Michigan State.
