College Sports Madness named Boise State freshman guard Joe Hanstad the Mountain West Conference player of the week today.

Making his first career start against Air Force on Saturday, Hanstad scored a team-high 19 points and was 4-of-9 from three as the Broncos notched their first conference win of the season and first overall win in 2012.

Hanstad - a true freshman from Dickinson, North Dakota - redshirted through the first 10 games of the season. But when fellow-freshman guard Iggy Hadziomerovic went down went down with a broke foot on December 17, Boise State head coach Leon Rice decided to burn his redshirt.

While Hanstad had appeared in 10 games as a reserve, less than an hour before tipoff against Air Force, coach Rice announced senior guard Wes Perryman was to serve a one-game suspension. Running out of names to put on his lineup card, Hanstad was put into the starting lineup. Prior to Saturday's game against the Falcons, Hanstad had scored just 20 total points in his career.
