BOISE, Idaho – The Boise State women’s tennis team continue a hot start to the season by defeating in-state rival, Idaho, 5-2 at the Boas Tennis Center on Saturday.
Boise State earned its first point by winning the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches. Marlena Pietzuch/Manuela Pietzuch partnered to win at the top spot over Beatriz Florez/Victoria Lozano, 8-2. Meanwhile, Morgan Basil/Sandy Vo cruised to a 6-0 lead before finishing the match at the right end of an 8-2 score. Both teams are 5-1 in doubles matches this season while Boise State is 14-4 in doubles overall.
Junior Marlena Pietzuch played in her first match as the No. 1 singles player for the Broncos this season, taking on the Vandals’ Victoria Lozano. Pietzuch entered the match as the only remaining Boise State player to be undefeated this year and kept the streak going with a 7-5, 6-2 win.
The Broncos honored the late Steve Appleton, former Boise State tennis player and Micron CEO, by wearing a patch on their uniform sleeves with his initials.
The women’s team will play again in two weeks when it heads to Malibu, Calif., to face Pepperdine and Arizona State, Feb. 24-25.
