BOISE -- The Boise State Broncos will start the 2012 college football season ranked 22nd in the USA Today coaches' poll.

The Broncos finished last year ranked 6th in the coaches' poll, after achieving an impressive, 12-1 record in 2011.

The coaches' poll is roughly one-third of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) ranking, which is used at the end of each regular season to determine which college teams go to some of the most popular bowl events in the nation.

Notably, LSU and Alabama are ranked 1st and 2nd in the poll. They are the teams who played for the National Championship last season.

USC is ranked 3rd, Oklahoma is 4th, and Oregon is 5th.

The Broncos' season-opening opponent, Michigan State, is ranked 13th.
