One-two punch of cold fronts drops temps, ushers in gusty winds

The daily forecast from Idaho's largest, most experienced team of meteorologists.

BOISE, Idaho — After another day of unusually warm spring weather on Wednesday, a pair of cold fronts will knock temperatures back down into cooler territory over the next couple of days and will usher in some very gusty winds to wrap up the work week.

The first - and mostly dry - cold front marched across southern Idaho before sunrise Thursday, triggering a few isolated rain showers in the Magic Valley and eastern Oregon. Skies will clear quickly behind the front as a drier and more stable air mass moves in, but winds will start intensifying as the day progresses, with gusts of 30-40mph possible across the Treasure and Magic Valleys this afternoon. Temperatures drop a bit, but still Boise will warm to near 70° under a mostly sunny sky, though the wind will make it feel cooler.

By Thursday afternoon and evening, the high terrain of eastern Oregon and central Idaho will likely start seeing rain and very high-elevation snow as the next cold front approaches from the west. A quick round of rain is expected across the Treasure Valley before sunrise Friday, with rain lingering in the Magic Valley possibly into midday. A few isolated thunderstorms are possible Friday afternoon, and temperatures will drop by about 5° over Thursday, but the biggest headline for the final day of the work week will be the wind. Gusts of 50mph are possible in the Twin Falls area, which could be damaging, and brisk 30-40mph northwesterly winds are likely in the Treasure Valley as the low-pressure system departs to the east.

The pool of cool air coming in behind Friday's front will drop temperatures down into the mid-60s, a hair below normal, but we'll start rebounding a bit over the weekend with temps back into the upper 60s in Boise by Sunday. The weekend carries a slim chance of some pop-up showers on Saturday and a cool breeze will persist, but pretty nice overall with mostly dry conditions and plenty of sun.
