Westbound I-84 in Nampa back open after semi overturns

All westbound lanes were blocked for nearly five hours between Franklin and Northside boulevards.

A stretch of westbound Interstate 84 in Nampa is back open after a three-vehicle crash involving an overturned semi shut it down for about five hours Thursday morning.

Idaho State Police said the crash happened around 7:13 a.m. Thursday near Franklin Boulevard - milepost 36.

Police say Ricky Hickstein, 59, of Vancouver, Wash., was driving a 2008 Dodge pickup in the merging (left) lane.  Kenneth Brooks, 56, of Star was driving a 2003 Peterbilt tractor pulling double tanker trailers in the middle lane.  Alysson Lindquist, 29, of Boise, was driving a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer in the right lane.

Hickstein failed to yield as he merged into the middle lane and struck the front of Brooks' Peterbilt tractor with the rear of his Dodge. The Dodge then collided with Lindquist's Mercury.

Hickstein's and Lindquist's vehicles struck the concrete barrier on the north side of the interstate.

Hickstein's vehicle re-entered the lanes of travel, facing eastbound in the westbound lanes, and struck the Peterbilt on the passenger side.

Brooks then lost control, causing the tractor and tanker trailers to overturn onto the driver's side, coming to rest in the lanes of travel.

Police say all drivers were wearing their seatbelts.

Brooks was transported by ground ambulance to Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Nampa. His condition has not been released.

Lanes were blocked for about five hours for the investigation and clean-up of the crash scene.

A large quantity of liquid sugar beet extract was spilled onto the roadway.

Hickstein was cited for inattentive/careless driving.
