BOISE - The latest bowl predictions from USA Today have Boise State taking on Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl. If the matchup comes to fruition, it would take place 10 years, almost to the day, after the Broncos beat the Sooners in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1, 2007.
That game is widely regarded as one of the best college football games ever, and included a series of trick plays by the Broncos as the clock wound down, a thrilling 43-42 overtime win, and a on-camera, sideline proposal by running back Ian Johnson to his then-cheerleader girlfriend.
More than any other game in Boise State history, that one put the Broncos on the national map, and in the hearts and minds of college football fans. It was a true underdog story - the scrappy team from Boise knocking off the mighty Sooners.
Boise State finished the season as the only undefeated team in the country, and ranked No. 5 in the Associated Press Top 25.
Boise State 2007 Fiesta Bowl
The Broncos celebrated that Fiesta Bowl team earlier this month before their homecoming game against Colorado State.
Boise State is 7-0 heading into this Saturday's matchup against Wyoming. If they win the rest of their games this season, including the conference championship game (likely against San Diego State), they are almost guaranteed a spot in one of the New Years Six bowl games.
The highest ranked Group of Five conference champion gets an automatic bid to one of those big-money games, and Boise State is currently the highest ranked G-5 team.
The Cotton Bowl is scheduled for Jan. 2, 2017 in Arlington, Texas.
